Capt Cook Causes and Effects

    In class we've been studying and looking at Captain Cook and his effects on the country. We had to chose an event and do an animation. The animation had to show a cause and an effect.
    I have done Cook and how he named places. He named places based on his experience there. His place names made the British feel at home but made the Maori feel less at home. 
    The first scene is of the Poverty Bay landing. There was a huge lack of communication even though they had a translator. A few of the Maori were shot and killed so they didn't give Cook what he wanted. Cook assumed they didn't have what he needed. This lead to him thinking the area was poor, hence the name Poverty Bay.
    When Cook landed in, what was soon to be Cannibal Cove, he was greeted by Maori. The Maori had a human arm bone as an offering. The arm was from an enemy that they had killed. They had eaten the flesh off of the bone, so Cook called the cove, Cannibal Cove.

       Recently in class we've been working on poems. First we made a class poem as a warm up. The poem was about the colour blue. We had to write a sentence about the colour blue. Then a couple of students went through and chose some 'sticky words'. These word are ones that stick in our brain.

       After we finished the class poem we worked on our own one. We had to grab and object at random out of the item box. The same items were given to all students around the country. We had to make a 40 word bank with words that described the item. We had to choose the 20 best words from our word bank to use in the poem. Each of the 20 words had to be written onto a separate piece of paper. Once the words were written out we had to put them into an order we liked the most. We got rid of the last two words. this was the order we had to write the words in on the draft(The black and white version of above). Once we had our draft checked we wrote it out on the coloured card. The title had to be an anagram of the item and the end had to be the item. 

       After we had written it out and had it checked we got to colour in the back.

       Hundreds of schools around New Zealand are doing the same thing. All of our class cards are being sent to another class somewhere in New Zealand. There are over 90,000 cards being made by students all over New Zealand. Our poems are being sent to Birkenhead, Auckland.

       

       This was quite a fun task in the sense that I never though of just writing up words describing something, then organising them to make sense. It was also interesting learning more interesting words to replace boring ones.
